Object: Re-dedication ceremony for the new Glenfield War Memorial
G0070 Anzac wreaths laid at Glenfield Memorial.
Glenfield’s first Anzac service was organised by Bruce Powell in 1997. Until then there had never been a dedication of the memorial and the War Memorial Hall and surrounds were in a dilapidated state. As a concerned Glenfield resident Bruce Powell approached the Glenfield Rotary Club for help. In the end it was the Glenfield Community Board who took on the project and got an architect to redesign the memorial at a cost of $12,000. The bricks from the original pillars have been recycled and the three gum pillars represent the roof-line of the War Memorial Hall. The original plaques are again affixed to two pillars and the inscribed bronze banner has been inlaid into the new memorial. It has become a tradition that at each service a family member speaks about their relative who went to war.
