The Sanders Memorial Cup is awarded to the winner each year of the senior interprovincial challenge competition for 14 ft single design yachts.
It was created by Walker and Hall and was first awarded in 1921 when this yacht race was originally established.
The competition came about when representative boats the HEATHER of Otago Province and the IRON DUKE of Auckland Province sailed in a best of five series. The series was won by the HEATHER, sailed by W.J.P.McCullouch.
The Sanders Memorial Cup was named in honour of naval hero Lt. Commander William Sanders of Takapuna, who was awarded the Victoria Cross in World War 1 and who was killed in 1917.
